History

Quartz is the second most common mineral in the Earth’s crust, after Feldspar. The word Quartz itself probably draws its name from ‘Quarz’ which has Eastern European origins. Another theory is that the name derives from ancient Greek ‘Krustallos’ meaning ice, because the Greeks believed it to be ice that never melted. Whatever the nomenclature, it is true that Quartz has been used since ancient times with prehistoric man using it to fashion tools. The Sumerians, at the height of their power, used the crystal to fashion engraved seals for official documentation.

The Egyptians used the gem more for decorative purposes carving it into beautiful figures and jewelry. In the British Isles, quartz was sometimes used to mark barrows and cairns. Quartz continued to be a valued gem in most of Europe through the 19^th century. The gem also contained piezoelectric properties, as discovered by Jacques and Pierre Curie, which led to it being used heavily in the electronics industry, becoming a major component of watches, record players and the like. Pure Quartz is by itself colorless and mostly transparent, but it does come in various shades forming other gems such as Amethyst and Citrine.
